Another Option for Lifestyle Education
Written by Louise Vancer, RD, CDE

Statistics are showing that people are living longer but often without the ability to fully enjoy life because of chronic illnesses. Enter into this equation the rising prevalence of obesity and chronic conditions like diabetes. This puts forth a challenge to healthcare providers. We need to focus on improving the quality of life as people live into the golden years. Don’t we all work hard when we are young so we can enjoy retirement?

However, as a registered dietitian and diabetes educator, I am aware of the huge self-care burdens that are placed on individuals when first diagnosed with diabetes. Many are prescribed medication and are encouraged to finger prick on a regular basis to help them manage their diabetes. As well, most patients are educated on lifestyle changes to promote weight loss which for many has been an ongoing challenge. And these are life-long changes. How can we, as health care providers, help patients stay healthy and yet not compromise their quality of life by placing more burdens on them?

I have done a lot of weight loss counseling over the years. It is never easy. There is no magic bullet. A lot of people come to me asking for a quick fix…something that will help them lose the necessary weight so they can get back to the life they like to live. If only it were that simple. It can be hard convincing people of the mindset change required to buy into a lifetime of healthy eating and active living. One thing I have found helpful is catering to their learning needs. Some find it easier in a group setting so they can get the support of their peers. Some prefer one-on-one counseling so their individual needs can be addressed at each visit. And more recently, we have had the pleasure of coaching patients through an online obesity treatment and prevention program called “Virtual Lifestyle Management service” (VLM) which offers a technological solution. This has added another dimension to the services that we are able to provide.
